The Work of Paul Howse

“I knew I wanted to be a car designer from a young age and worked tirelessly until that dream became a reality.”

I’ve been obsessed with cars my whole life. Growing up in Buckinghamshire, with my parents and sister, my father worked at Silverstone for a leading race team and built his own trials cars and restored his own classics. So I guess I didn’t have much choice!”

Having graduated from the Vehicle Design MA course at the Royal College of Art in 2008, Paul started his career at McLaren Automotive in March 2009. Soon after joining, his exterior theme was chosen for P1. Rob Melville, now Design Director, helped mentor him and together with a team of incredible people they shaped the design language of McLaren Automotive. Paul was the Lead Designer on several key products for the company, including the exterior of P1, P1 GTR, 720S as well as the 570S interior. Most recently he was a Senior Design Manager on the the new Artura.

Initially studying at Northumbria University in Newcastle-upon-Tyne under the legend of John Sweeney, this not only gave Paul his foundations in creative thinking and innovation, but also taught him resilience.

“I am now enjoying focusing back on the essence of how my story all started and that is with drawing cars for the shear fun of it!”

Depicting cars in an elegant, minimalist way but with an accuracy and detail that comes from working for over ten years at one of the most scrutinous and obsessive design studios of current times. Paul’s work is drawn entirely freehand and then delicately layered up with washes.
