Left to my imagination I usually turn to the early days of motoring, when hard-as-nails drivers threw their cars round rutted, stony roads at terrifying speeds for 8 hours or more. Sometimes it went wrong.
About Stefan Marjoram
Most of my early career was spent as a freelance creative director, working with studios such as Aardman Animation on a wide range of fun TV idents, commercials and films. I share my passion for animation with a love for drawing cars. This has led to some hugely exciting projects, including repeated commissions from Ferrari, Porsche and Mercedes. Long-term projects include documenting the build of Bloodhound and the Beast of Turin; two land speed record cars separated by 100 years. I'm also regularly sent to sketch live at events from Goodwood to the Mint 400 desert race. I like to encourage people to draw - young or old - and have done several free workshops for the Bugatti Trust. More recently I've been making weekly youtube films that explain my drawing process. I like to work from life whenever possible - and strive for a drawing that is loose but accurate. Sitting in front of a car for an hour, taking in all the tiny details as I sketch is very rewarding - as are the friendly chats with the people I meet. When working from my imagination the drawings often have a more comic style - perhaps it's my animation background coming through again. I usually use pencil and watercolor - or work digitally on an iPad Pro.
